Here is how you defeat that fool Ancano in Skyrim at the College of Winterhold (hogwarts?). The quest is called the "Eye of Magnus"
Use the staff to get up the the Hall of Elements, once inside wait for the "cut-scene". Magic won't work on Ancano, Toldifr says use the staff on the Eye of Magnus...

Well I got into the into the college, as I entered the hall of elements where the eye thing is, my character started to fall then stop and then it said didn't reach It until I went up to ancano and headed towards the exit. Now it will not let me defeat him at all. What to do?
